Vehicles and vulnerability to wind

It is essential to know if your vehicle is vulnerable to wind in the event of strong winds. Consequently, it's not allowed for vehicles that are vulnerable to wind to cross the bridge in wind stronger than 15 m/s.

Vehicles that are classed as vulnerable to wind are most susceptible

It is essential to know if your vehicle is vulnerable to wind in the event of strong winds on the bridge. Large vehicles naturally have a larger wind surface than smaller vehicles, and an empty truck is much more vulnerable to wind than a car.

A car will almost always be able to cross the bridge as long as it keeps to the recommended speed. A car towing a trailer or caravan is much more vulnerable to wind than a car on its own.

When is a vehicle vulnerable to wind?

Both large and small vehicles can be wind sensitive.

Examples of wind-sensitive vehicles - but not an exhaustive list - are:

  • Trailers, trailers, caravans (whatever vehicle they are towed by)
  • Other trailers weighing less than 10 tonnes (or 10,000 kg). This is e.g. an empty or lightly loaded truck trailer.
  • Vans, vans, motorhomes and minibuses with a total weight of less than 3,500 kg.

It will always be up to the driver to assess whether a vehicle is wind sensitive.

Safety rules in the event of strong winds

Wind (north/south)

Information on the Storebælt Bridge

Strong wind (10 m/s)

Yellow flashing lights, signs, and wind socks on the bridge warn vehicles that are vulnerable to wind of crosswinds.

Moderate gale (15 m/s) and crosswind

Vehicles that are vulnerable to wind are informed before the last exit that crossing the bridge is not allowed. The recommended maximum speed for other vehicles is 80 km/h.

Strong gale (20 m/s) and crosswind

Vehicles that are vulnerable to wind are informed before the last exit that crossing the bridge is not allowed. The recommended maximum speed for other vehicles is 50 km/h.

Storm (25 m/sek)

The bridge is closed to all traffic by way of barriers. Signs at the last two exits before the bridge inform you that the bridge is closed and when it is expected to reopen.

When you cannot cross the bridge

If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot cross the bridge due to strong winds, for example, there are holding areas on both sides of the bridge.

At Fyn, you can wait at the rest area by the Monarch cafeteria at exit 44.

At Zealand, you can wait at the Q8 petrol station at exit 43.

Information will be available at both places on when you can cross the bridge.
